Bird Proofing Prescot & North West
Professional bird proofing and pigeon control across Prescot, Knowsley and the wider North West. From single houses to large commercial buildings.
The Pigeon That Hitched a Ride
A few years back we took on one of the biggest bird jobs I’ve ever done — a large derelict factory in the North West that had been taken over by pigeons. Years of fouling, hundreds of birds, the kind of job that takes days not hours.
We cleared the birds, cleaned up the mess, sealed every entry point we could find. It was hard, thorough work. By the end of it we were confident the building was secure.
What we didn’t account for was one very determined pigeon who had decided our van was a better option than the factory. He tucked himself into the wheel arch and stayed there — all the way to our next job. Over a hundred miles away.
When we found him at the other end he just looked at us. Completely unbothered. After surviving a full factory clearance and a motorway trip in a wheel arch, we decided he’d earned his freedom. We let him go.
I still think about that bird sometimes. Of all the pigeons I’ve dealt with over the years — he’s the one that got away. Fair enough.
Why Bird Problems Don’t Fix Themselves
Pigeons and other pest birds are creatures of habit. Once they find a roosting or nesting spot they like, they come back — year after year — unless something physically stops them.
In areas like Prescot, Knowsley and the wider Merseyside region, older buildings and industrial properties are particularly vulnerable. Flat roofs, ledges, guttering and roof voids all provide ideal nesting spots.
Left untreated, bird problems get worse — not better. A pair of pigeons becomes a flock. A flock becomes a fouling problem. And fouling brings its own serious issues.
The Real Cost of Bird Problems
It’s not just the noise and mess. Bird infestations cause real, costly damage if left unaddressed:
Building Damage
Pigeon fouling is highly acidic. Over time it corrodes stonework, metalwork, guttering and roofing materials.
Health Risks
Dried bird droppings carry bacteria and fungi including Histoplasma and Cryptococcus — serious respiratory risks when disturbed.
Blocked Gutters
Nesting material and fouling rapidly block guttering and drainage, leading to damp, leaks and costly water damage.
Secondary Pests
Bird nests attract bird mites, fleas, beetles and flies — which then find their way into the building itself.
Reputation Damage
For businesses, visible fouling on entrances and signage puts customers off and creates a poor first impression.
Legal Responsibility
Landlords and commercial property owners have a duty to manage pest bird problems under health and safety legislation.
Bird Proofing & Control Services
Every bird problem is different. We assess the situation first and recommend the most appropriate solution — whether that’s proofing, deterrents, clearance or a combination of all three.
🔩 Spike Systems
Stainless steel or polycarbonate spikes fitted to ledges, rooflines, signs and guttering. Prevents landing and roosting without harming birds.
🕸️ Bird Netting
Heavy duty netting to exclude birds from large open areas — rooftops, courtyards, loading bays and warehouse spaces.
⚡ Electric Deterrent Systems
Low-profile electric track systems that deliver a mild deterrent shock, teaching birds to avoid treated surfaces.
🏭 Large Scale Clearance
Full bird clearance for derelict, industrial and commercial properties — including fouling removal and full proofing to prevent reentry.
🧹 Guano Clearance
Safe, professional removal of bird fouling with full PPE and biocide treatment. Essential before proofing work begins.
🏠 Chimney Bird Guards
Fitted to chimney pots to prevent jackdaws, starlings and pigeons nesting inside — a common problem in older North West properties.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it legal to remove pigeons?
Yes, under the general licence issued by Natural England, feral pigeons can be controlled where they pose a risk to public health or cause damage to property. We always operate within current wildlife legislation.
Will bird spikes harm the birds?
No. Spike systems are a humane deterrent — they prevent birds from landing without causing injury. They’re one of the most widely recommended methods by pest control professionals.
How long does bird proofing last?
Professional spike and netting systems are built to last many years when properly installed. We use commercial grade fixings and materials designed to withstand North West weather conditions.
Can you proof solar panels?
Yes — pigeons nesting under solar panels is an increasingly common problem. We fit purpose-made mesh systems around the panel edges to prevent access without affecting performance.
Do I need to clean up fouling before proofing?
Yes — fouling should always be professionally cleared before proofing is installed. We can carry out both as part of the same job, and all guano clearance is done with full PPE and biocide treatment.
Do you work on commercial and industrial properties?
Yes. We have experience with everything from single terraced houses to large derelict factory clearances. Every job gets a proper survey and a tailored solution.
